Three ways to a point
- Talk and point
- Hold the right ⌥ key, talk and point at the spot. On pointing words like “this” or “here” a pin drops where your pointer is. When you let go, the sentence is split into points.
- Annotate
- Press ⌃⌥P. A crosshair appears, like ⌘⇧4. Click anywhere: a pin drops and a card with a caret opens next to it. Type your note, hold ⌥ to talk, or do both. ↩ closes the card, the next click starts the next point. Esc ends annotating.
- Without voice
- Hold ⌥ and let the pointer rest for a moment. A ring fills, then a pin drops. After you let go, you type one line per pin and Tab moves to the next. No microphone or speech recognition needed.
Permissions
Deixis asks for everything one after another on first launch. You can also find each permission later in System Settings under Privacy & Security. In the Deixis settings, a list shows the state of every permission, with a button that jumps to the right place.
- Screen & System Audio Recording
- Needed for the image of every point. After you allow it, Deixis restarts itself and carries on at the same step. From time to time macOS asks again. Deixis then shows an explanation with a link to Settings. Typed comments keep working meanwhile.
- Microphone
- Needed so Deixis can hear you. Without it, silent captures and typed comments remain.
- Speech Recognition
- Deixis downloads the speech model for German and English to your Mac once. Recognition then runs locally.
- Input Monitoring
- Needed so Deixis can see the right ⌥ key as the hold key. If you decline it, you hold ⌃⌥Space instead. The setup then shows that combination.
- Folders
- You grant the projects folder (usually
~/Projects) and the export location (usually the Desktop) once. Deixis does not ask again. - Notifications
- Only for progress reports from Claude Code. Optional.
A permission is granted but Deixis reports it as missing? Remove Deixis from the list, add it again with the plus button and restart Deixis.
Enabling the Safari extension
- Open Safari, then Safari › Settings › Extensions.
- Tick “Deixis”.
- Choose “Always Allow on Every Website”. Without it, the extension cannot read the element under the pin.
The Deixis setup leads you there too and notices when the extension is active.
Chrome extension
Install the “Deixis” extension from the Chrome Web Store once it is published there. It connects to the app by itself, and you confirm the first connection once in Deixis. The extension talks only to your local app over 127.0.0.1.
Installing the Claude Code plugin
- In the Deixis setup, open the “Claude Code” step and click the button. Deixis copies the install command.
- Paste the command into a terminal and run it.
- Start Claude Code in your project. Once the plugin reports in, Deixis shows “Connected to” and the project name.
With /deixis-watch, a session waits for new rounds and works through them one by one. The session is busy meanwhile until you press Esc. If Deixis is not installed or not running, Claude Code behaves as before.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Deixis need an account or the internet?
- No. There is no account and no server. Recording, speech recognition and text recognition run on the Mac.
- Where is my data?
- In the app’s protected container and in the App Group on your Mac. What you send goes only to the target you choose. More in the privacy policy.
- How do I delete everything?
- Delete Deixis from the Applications folder, then move
~/Library/Containers/app.deixis.macand~/Library/Group Containers/AY9VQ7X6DM.app.deixisto the Trash. - Why does recording not start when I hold ⌥ for a special character?
- On purpose. Recording starts only after 250 milliseconds without another key. If you type ⌥L or ⌥E, it stays off.
- Does Deixis work in Firefox or other apps?
- Yes. Without an extension, Deixis reads the text under the pin and the address from the address bar. With the Safari or Chrome extension, element, console and requests are added.
- Which macOS version do I need?
- macOS 26 or later. Splitting into points with Apple Intelligence is optional. Without it, Deixis uses simpler rules.
- Can I get a refund?
- Purchase, payment and refunds go through Apple. You request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
